July is full of old-fashioned fun in Glenwood

Photos by Cheryl Thornburg Everyone gets in the act for Glenwood’s fanciful 4th of July Doo Dah parade.

The 4th of July lasts for three days in Glenwood. The fun begins about 8 a.m. on July 4 when the Glenwood Street Market sets up for this special market day offering a variety of food – home-baked items, canned goods, fresh produce, plants, handcrafted jewelry, leather goods, outdoor decorative items and much more.

From 2-6 p.m. on July 4, there will be games, and food (BBQ pork sandwich, potato salad, baked beans for $10 a plate) at Glenwood Community Park.
The annual Doo Dah parade kicks off at 6 p.m. at Los Olmos Lodge and proceeds south along Highway 180. Everyone joins in for this festive event, decorating horses, bicycles, cars , trucks and themselves in the spirit of the holiday.
After the parade, back at the community park, the Gila River Band will play until dark when fabulous fireworks will light up the sky.
The Glenwood Street Market will also be open on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood from 8-1 on Friday and Saturday July 5 and 6.
Saturday July 6 will be another jam-packed day. Fin addition to the Market, the first Brush Poppers Ranch Rodeo brings excitement to the Glenwood Arena on Catwalk Road by the park beginning at 1 p.m. Competitions include cow milking, horse catching, sorting and range branding and team roping. Seven teams have entered. There will also be concessions.  Admission is free.
Saturday evening, the Frisco Cowbelles BBQ dinner starts at 6 at Glenwood Community Park. Then at 7 p.m., the Art Auction begins. Proceeds provide money for ag scholarships and help fund the famous educational McKeen Ranch Days program where buses of school children arrive at the ranch to learn about agriculture and ranching.

At 8 p.m., the Gila River Band takes the stage so you can dance the night away. Admission is free.

Every Wednesday — The Summer Reading Program continues every Wednesday in July from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Glenwood Community Library. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories. It is geared towards kids preschool through middle school but all ages are welcome. There will be separate programs for preschool and older children. Every child who attends will receive a book and a book bag. Snacks are provided. Kids earn prizes through participation and reading. There will be a Grand Prize giveaway at the end of the summer. Children can sign up at the library.
Friday July 12 is Movie Night at Glenwood Community Library. The film, is “The Upside,” a comedy-drama inspired by a true life story about a paraplegic billionaire (played by Bryan Cranston) who hires a paroled convict (played by Kevin Hart) to take care of him. The film also features Nicole Kidman and Julianna Matguies. Free popcorn and soft drinks are provided. Donations are always appreciated. Showtime is 7 p.m. Friday July 12 at the library, 14 Menges Lane, Glenwood, New Mexico 88039.
Cosmic Campground –The Alpha Capricornids metor shower is active from July 11 through August with a “plateau-like” maximum centered on July 29. This shower is not very strong and rarely produces in excess of five shower members per hour. What is notable about this shower is the number of bright fireballs produced during its activity period. Bring a friend, red filtered flashlight, very warm clothes, lawn chair, and telescope and binoculars if you have them. Make new friends and enjoy the wonders of the night sky. Glenwood Street Market – Every Saturday
The Glenwood Street Market, is back with a variety of unique arts and crafts, and baked goods, produce and snacks. The market is open from every Saturday from approximately 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood.

The Trading Post has reopened under new management, Kerry Ruth and Carla Schmeider, who also operate Los Olmos Lodge. The rejuvenated store, on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood, offers snacks, drinks, sandwiches and – gas. As an added bonus, they have purchased the stock from the Rock Shop which had been closed and rockhounds of all ages will be pleased to peruse their offerings.

Mogollon, the area’s own Ghost Town is back in business. The quaint former mining community opened for the season May 18. The Purple Onion Cafe opens at 9 a..m., the Old Kelly Store and the Mogollon Museum open at 10 a.m.

The Catwalk Gallery and Gift Shop on Highway 180 in Glenwood is also now open for season, Stop by to see the exciting new artwork and artisan crafts.
