At 10 am people will gather at the Mogollon Cemetery Archives at 891 Bursum Road (NM 159), Mogollon, NM 88039. At 10.30am we will carpool up Fannie Road (a 10-minute drive in 4WD vehicles) to Mogollon Cemetery where we will welcome people, speak briefly about the Mogollon Cemetery which served the Historic Districts of Mogollon and Fannie Hill Mill and Company Town, the 100th Anniversary of the Gila Wilderness, and the importance of preserving Historic Places and Sites in the Gila National Forest.
People will each be given a Finder’s Guide map and be invited to wander through Mogollon Cemetery where guides will answer questions and help find the way.
People may carpool or hike (45 minutes, 0.09 miles downhill, rough dirt road) back to Mogollon town where lunch can be purchased at the Purple Onion Café. The Museum, Cemetery Archives, workshops, and The Old Kelly Store will be open to visit.
Be prepared: This is a morning, outdoor event at 7000-7100 feet elevation. The Cemetery is undeveloped terrain with rough paths. No smoking to prevent wildfire destroying historic hand-hewn wooden grave markers. We recommend hiking boots, long trousers, hats and gloves, and water bottles. Rattlesnakes could be present so dogs should remain in vehicles. No hiking off road as old mine shafts and new drill pads are present.
Please respect burial sites, some of which are hard to identify.
Please respond showing your interest in attending so that we can gauge attendance and Mogollon can plan accordingly as we are a remote mountain town 79 miles north of Silver City. Closer to the event an announcement with more information will be made.
